the post-hippie movement

public - created 03/06/04
The hippie movements of the past served as awesome experiments in humanity. The genuine intentions of hippies throughout time still remain: to spread love and generate peace everywhere. What is changing is our relationship with the plastic world we have no choice but to live in. Those who learn to adapt to it will thrive and go on to prosper and eventually create the new world. Those who lay reticent in the past (i.e. technophobes) will suffer in ignorance and isolation . Memories are pleasant occupants of brain cells, but do not serve us unless we have learned something from them, and are willing to embrace change. Post-hippies retain all the best values of old-school hippies, but have the modern intelligence necessary to create sustainable systems that will ultimately give rise to a whole new society.

Whether or not you shave, listen to Phish, wear/make patchwork and hemp, smoke pot, live on sprouts or hate Republicans, this tribe is a progressive version of what we all thought we wanted 10 years ago when we were living in school buses with no money. We understand that we must make a few sacrifices to get what we want in the end--and that may mean working a meaningless job temporarily, cutting our hair, wearing pantyhose, taking out our piercings or otherwise playing the game. As long as we do this in full awareness of the Big Picture, "conforming" to the Man becomes more of a clever maneuver than a sell-out. Those of us with the good of all mankind in our hopes and dreams will be blessed with the resources to accomplish our goals. We must bear this in mind as we run across questionable individuals along the way--there are vampires out there masquerading as our brothers and sisters. One critical skill of the post-hippie is the ability to discern our kin from our antipodes.

Topics of interest to this tribe include: Sustainable communities, health/diet, raising children, using our creativity to support us financially, spirituality, music/events, fashion, business, world politics, global ecology, entheogens, and general silliness. So far, some of the threads here have inspired the idea of creating a magazine. If any of you are interested in contributing to that project, please send me a message.

Thanks for being here now.
